Strategies for Controlling Dust Mites

A good place to start in the prevention of dust mites is in your bedroom.

• Encase all bedding, pillows, box spring, and mattresses in anti-allergen, dust-proof covers.

• Wash your bedding and blankets in hot 130 degree water weekly.

• Clean your house weekly with cloths and cleaning tools that trap dust rather than simply move it around or release it back into the air.

• Keep humidity levels below 50% by using an air conditioner or dehumidifier.

• If possible, remove carpets in the bedroom, or vacuum frequently using a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner.

• Get rid of heavy drapery, blinds, and upholstered furniture in your bedroom

• Clean and sanitize your air duct system regularly to help rid the system of harmful contaminants.

• Use a HEPA air purifier and install a high quality media air cleaner on your furnace.

• Cover your vents with vent filters.
